Office chairs are incredibly difficult pieces to buy. Intended for extended periods of sitting, strength and flexibility are key. Posture, support for the lower-back, free circulation throughout the upper thighs, adjustable backrests for dynamic seating; these qualities are of paramount importance. Charles Eames designed his Aluminium Group of chairs in 1958 and they have gone on to worldwide recognition. A true innovation, Eames found a way to suspend wire mesh in between an aluminium frame and then stretch it out, creating a ‘tension seat’. He took two features from previous designs: curved or ‘waterfall edges’ to reduce pressure on the legs and a dipped backrest to encourage active, upright sitting. The original aluminium mesh chair with a pedestal base (the EA108) was later developed into a padded leather version. The EA117 has a swivel base, which allows the user to easily move from one point to another without stretching unnecessarily, while the EA208 and EA217 Soft Pad versions provide ultimate comfort. These are an elegant, but functional addition to your home or office workspace.
